Carr set the tone for the second half, as she scored on an offensive rebound, drew the foul and converted a three-point play to give the Fish a 15-8 lead.Jennifer Stephens scored on a jump shot and capped the quarter with a three-point play for five of her team-high nine points. Carr also finished with nine. The Fishermen pulled away for good in the final period, as they used a 16-0 run to build an eventual 22-point lead.Sara Cullen scored six points in the period, which was capped by a Stephens steal and score.Jamie Coggins missed most of the third quarter with foul trouble and finished with six points.

RAYMOND - The Naselle Comets boys won their second league game of the early season and will go into the New Year with a 2-0 Pacific League record. They are currently 4-2 overall, after a 59-42 win at Raymond Tuesday, Dec. 19. The Comets grabbed the lead early and ran to their decisive win.Two of their youngest players, freshman Austin Burkhalter and sophomore Conor Smith led the Comets with 17 and 16 points respectively. Austin added seven rebounds and Smith six boards. Junior Kyle Burkhalter, who has been averaging about 20 points a game, was in double figures for the sixth straight game with 10 points, plus he had six rebounds. The Comets scored in double figures in each of the first three periods and held the Gulls to single digit scoring in each of those quarters. Naselle led 13-8, 29-16, and 51-25 at the end of each of the first three periods. Naselle's breakaway quarter was the third period where they connected on 11 of 15 shots and out-scored the Gulls 22-9, more than doubling their lead over the home team. The Comets big lead allowed Coach Brian Macy to give his bench players some extended playing time.Naselle's shooting percentage was among the highest that they have shot this year (46 percent) and their defense, especially in the second half, effectively bothered the Gulls.Macy reported that Austin and Smith had breakout games for the Comets. Austin caused matchup problems for the Gulls and he got to the foul line a lot while Smith played a real balanced game. Macy said that the coaches were very pleased with the defense that the Comets played, especially in the third period. The Comets now enter the Vince Dulcich Tournament in Astoria where they open against the lightning-quick, veteran (10 of the first 12 players are seniors) Astoria Fishermen today, Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 8 p.m., following the Naselle-Astoria girls opening game beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Naselle boys will play their second game this Friday, Dec. 29, at 4 p.m. in the consolation game if they lose their first game, or at 8 p.m. in the championship game if they win their first game. The other two teams which will provide their second game opposition are Banks and Knappa. The Comets enter the New Year with an extremely tough first week, playing three of their strongest league opponents in four days, two of them away from the friendly confines of Lyle Patterson Gym. They travel to Oyhut for a make-up game with the North Beach Hyaks on Wednesday, Jan. 3, entertain the Willapa Valley Vikings at home on Thursday, Jan. 4, and travel to play the South Bend Indians on Saturday, Jan. 6. All three games are Pacific League games.

Comets get overtime win over Gulls

By PHIL RAISTAKKAObserver corespondentNASELLE - Ring the bell! Toot the horn! Beat the drum! What a way to open the Christmas holiday! The Naselle Comets girls gave their sparse crowd a great way to begin the Christmas season as they came from behind twice in the closing minutes of their victory over league rival Raymond.Pacific League game with the Raymond Seagulls girls team to beat the Gulls 41-39 in overtime. The game played Thursday, Dec. 21, in Lyle Patterson Gym saw the Comets improve their league record to 1-1 and 3-3 overall.Naselle Coach Bob Torppa said, "We needed this one. After losing a couple of tough ones, it did us lots of good to come back and win one the way that we won this one. I am proud of the girls in the way that they improved their ball handling and cut down on the turnovers in the second half. They hung in there and our shooting was better, probably the best it has been this season from both the floor and the foul line. We really did a good job of staying with it to come back and tie at the end of regulation and then come back to win in the last seconds of overtime."The Comets did just that, and overcame the adversity of losing their top scorer, Erin Saari, to fouls with 1:38 to go in regulation. The Comets were also still playing without the services of Brandi Keightley who is out with a hand injury until after the first of the year. With those two guards unavailable for the stretch run, Torppa called on the services of reserve Kelsey Fletcher and she more than filled the spot for the last five and one-half minutes of the game.It was anything but a cakewalk for the Comets to get to the point where they could win this game in overtime. The Gulls took an early lead and led 12-9 at the end of one period. The Comets then rallied to tie the score at 12 on Cheryl Steppe's two hoops, only to see the Gulls score six straight to pull out in front again. The two teams then traded points as Steppe, Ashley Ahlstrom and Saari scored for Naselle while the Gulls Tammy McGough and McKenzy Miller were scoring for Raymond. The Gulls led the second quarter scoring 12-11 and went in at the half leading 24-20.The Comets, with points coming from Kellyn Pakenen, Saari and Ahlstrom tied the game twice and briefly took the lead at 28-26, only to see the Gulls hold on for the third quarter lead at 32-30 after being outscored 10-8 in the period. Saari's four fourth quarter free throws, along with Ahlstrom's one freebie, nearly matched the Gull output, and the Gulls led by one when Saari drew her fifth foul. They added another free throw and led 37-25 with 48 seconds left in regulation time. However, Fletcher stole the ball and the Comets called time with 16 seconds left. The tying shot was missed but Ahlstrom rebounded and her putback tied the game at 37 with 3.6 seconds left in regulation time. The Gulls called time and they just did miss the winning shot on a full court drive, and the game went into overtime. The four-minute overtime was half over before either team could score. Jenny Klinger then dropped in a long deuce to give the Comets their first lead since early on the third period. However, McGough popped in another hoop and the game was tied again at 39 with a little over a minute left in overtime. McGough also drew a foul on her shot but she missed the free throw and Steppe pulled down yet another rebound (15 for the game for a double double to go with her 13 points) and the Comets called time with 17 seconds left. Playing for the last shot, Klinger missed a long two from the side but Steppe was there for her 15th rebound. She pulled it down and put the ball back in the hoop for a 41-39 lead with eight seconds left. The Gulls were not able to get off a good clean shot and the Comets had their first league win of the year, earned before the Christmas holiday."Hitting the board the way that we did gave us the chance to come back. We had some of our best shooting of the year and we beat a team that has a couple of league wins. If we keep that up we should be able to do well in Astoria," Torppa concluded. The Comets girls now enter the Vince Dulcich Tournament in Astoria where they open against the Astoria Fishermen today, Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 6:30 p.m. The Naselle girls will play their second game this Friday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. in the consolation game if they lose their first game, or at 6 p.m. in the championship game if they win their first game. The other two teams which will provide their second game opposition are Banks and Knappa. The Naselle girls have a busy first week of the New Year as they travel to Menlo to do battle with the Willapa Valley Vikings on Wednesday, Jan. 3, and entertain South Bend on Friday, Jan 5. Both games are Pacific League counters against two of the strongest teams in the league.

“A dirty job” — As he wiped away the slimy yellow goo from his fingers, all John Hines (above) could say was “yuck, nacho cheese.” Such are the risks when it is your turn to clean out the trash from the bleachers following a home basketball game at Lyle Patterson Gymnasium. The boys and girls basketball teams switch off on concessions and clean up duty depending on which team is playing that night. Last Thursday night it was the boys basketball teams’ turn. Stephan Griss, a sophomore and guard on the JV team, said he doesn’t mind the job, especially since the bleacher sweepers get to use electric leaf blowers to speed up the task. “It’s not bad actually, the leaf blowers make it a lot easier, definitely,” he said. Hines said that using the blowers is great as you don’t have to touch the trash. That is, until you get to the end of the bleachers, where some stuff can get caught on it’s way to the floor below — and where he encountered his cheesy nemesis.

COMETS WORK LATE TO DEFEAT SEAGULLS

Courtesy of SportsRadio 1230 ESPN
A botched inbounds play turned into a game-winning layup by Cheryl Steppe as the Naselle Comets defeated the Raymond Seagulls 41-39 in overtime at Patterson Gymnasium Thursday night. The loss was Raymond's first in Pacific 2B League play as the Comets evened their league record at 1-1 and improved their overall record to 3-3Erin Saari paced the Comets with a game-high 15 points, but fouled out with four minutes remaining in regulation. Naselle, still missing the injured Brandi Keightley, went with the same five players on the floor for the remainder of the fourth quarter and overtime, with Steppe leading the way with 13 points and 15 rebounds."She's a horse," said head coach Bob Torppa of his 6-0 senior post."We just kind of gutted it out in that overtime. Kelsey Fletcher came in and did a nice job."The Comets overcame some first half ballhandling problems to tie the game against the quick, agressive Seagulls."We just killed ourselves," said Torppa. "We had about 16 turnovers in the first half. They are a very quick team."Jenny Klinger's only basket of the contest tied the game in the fourth quarter. It was Klinger who found Steppe open underneath the basket on the final inbounds play to win it, after the Comets failed to properly execute the play call. The senior guard also had two steals in the game.Naselle's next opponent will be Astoria in the first round of the Vince Dulcich Tournament on Wednesday, December 27. The game will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Naselle boys against Astoria at 8:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on KAST-AM 1370.

The game, played Tuesday, Dec. 12, in Lyle Patterson Gym saw the Comets record drop to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in league. The Comets fell behind in the first period 9-15 but they put together a big second quarter, outscoring the Hyaks 17-8 to go in at the break leading 26-23. However, after the intermission, it was a totally different story as the Hyaks took control with a 42-15 second half.Erin Saari led the Comets with 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Haley Landis led in rebounds with nine. The Comets second period play didn't hold up against the Hyaks balanced offense in the second half. The Hyaks had three players in double figures and one just out of double digits while Naselle had only Saari in double figures with her game-high 15 points. Naselle only shot 26 percent for the game so rebounding was important for the Comets where Landis stood out with support from Saari. The Hyaks, after getting warmed up in the second half, made more than 42 percent of their tries.

NASELLE - They had to work overtime - in fact two overtimes - to do it, but the Naselle Comets boys won their first Pacific League basketball game of the year 55-48, in two overtime periods, over Tacoma Baptist. The game, the first played after two days of storm-cancelled events, was played in Naselle's Lyle Patterson Gym Saturday, Dec. 16. Naselle's overall record climbed to 3-2, 1-0 in league games. The Comets held the lead at all of the first three quarters, 15-6, 28-23 and 42-37, only to stub their toe badly in the fourth period. The Crusaders won the fourth quarter battle 8-3 to send the game into overtime, tied at 45. The Comets could have cinched the victory in regulation time if they hadn't, gone stone cold at the foul line in the fourth quarter. At one point, the Comets were shooting an "0-fer" (as in 0 for seven) at the foul line in the fourth stanza. Things didn't improve greatly in the first overtime that ended in another tie at three points apiece, sending the game into its second overtime.Naselle, mainly behind the scoring of Kyle Burkhalter, who led the Comets with a double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Nathan Sultemeier, 14 game points, and tough defense held the Crusaders scoreless in the second overtime while Naselle was scoring seven points. The 7-0 period gave the Comets their hard-earned 55-48 win.Coach Brian Macy said, "I thought this was the first time all year that we showed up and played lackadaisically. We were content to just play with a team we should out-play. Our focus was to try and push the ball, and we didn't do that either. I think our focus, or lack thereof, really showed at the free-throw line as we were 12-26."There were some bright spots - Conor Smith stepping up with 13 rebounds to go with Kyle's 14, is huge. If he can continue to do that, and others try to reach this level we could really dominate the boards."We got some huge free throws from Nathan Sultemeier in the two overtimes. He finished 6-7."

ILWACO - Lanie Kary's jump-hook in the paint with 36 seconds remaining put Ilwaco up by five and the Lady Fishermen held off a feisty Naselle team 49-46 in non-league girls' basketball action Thursday at Aase Gymnasium.Ilwaco had built a 34-23 halftime lead by shooting 56 percent from the field with five players making the scoring column and holding Naselle to a 33 percent ratio and had turned the basketball over only six times in the first two periods while out-rebounding the Comets 13-7 at popcorn time.In the third period both teams tossed the suddenly slippery orb away a dozen times apiece and the Comets led by Jenny Klinger's five points and Cheryl Steppe's four outscored Anna Kitzman, who tallied two field goals and two free throws, 9-6 in the sloppily played quarter. Steppe continued to score in the final period as her free toss with 1:54 brought Naselle to within three points. Kary hit a bucket off of an offensive rebound, but Erin Saari's pass to Collette Beaulaurier with 1:10 remaining in the fray made the score 47-44 in favor of the Lady Fishermen.Allison Brooks found Kary with a perfect pass with 36 ticks of the clock for her game-clinching hoop as the 30-second clock buzzer was going off. Steppe scored at the final horn to end the contest at 49-46. Naselle coach Bobby Torppa said, "We had our chances. We missed too many free throws down the stretch and could have made some better decisions at times, been more under control, but I'm proud of how we came back against a good team." Torppa's troops were missing leading scorer Brandi Keightley who broke her little finger in a PE class Thursday. The Comets finished 13 of 27 from the line (48 percent), and were only 4-10 in the final period. Ilwaco potted nine of 16 from the charity stripe for 56 percent. The Lady Fishermen shot the basketball well from the floor, sinking 19 of 41 for 46 percent efficiency while the Comets were 15-40 for 38 percent. Both teams finished with 24 turnovers and the Lady Fishermen used their size advantage to out-board Naselle 26-21.Saari for Naselle had five assists to lead all players in that category and Steppe had seven rebounds, while Brooks led Ilwaco with six boards. Kitzman scored 20 points and Kary 18 to lead the Lady Fishermen and Steppe banked home 17 markers for the Comets.Foul trouble for Ilwaco took its toll in the second half as Kitzman and Kary each had to spend some pine time because they had four infractions and point guard Bonnie Perez, who finished with five points and two assists, eventually fouled out. The home team was whistled for 19 fouls while Naselle committed 17 infractions. Ilwaco coach Ned Bittner had praise for Tara Hankins and Alexa Moses' solid play in reserve roles.Bittner said, "At times the game wasn't real pretty, but a win is a win against our rivals."Ilwaco improves to 3-1 and Naselle is 0-2 on the season.

The Comet JV's broke open a close contest in the final period to win 34-29. Emily Green scored 15 and Nicole Laney 10 for the winners while Ilwaco, who had a two-game win streak going into the contest, was led by Marin McDonnell's nine and Erin Kelly and Aimee Banuet's seven points each.Naselle - Steppe 17, Saari 9, Klinger 6, Pakenen 4, Beaulaurier 4, Ahlstrom 6Ilwaco - Kitzman 20, Kary 18, Perez 5, Bliss 4, Moses 2

Disappointment” — Narci Carlson and Kristina Chism let loose sighs of disappointment after watching the Wahkiakum Mules boys’ basketball team sink a last minute three-pointer that sealed their blow-out victory over Naselle Saturday night. The winner of the game is awarded the KM Trophy, named for the hill that separates the two long-time rival schools. “This game was kind of a depressing game because it’s our rival and we were really excited,” said Chism following the game. “Those two last quarters, they kind of shot us out of the water,” said Carlson. “It’s just known that the most important game is against the Mules.” Chism concluded, “It would have been a really big moral boost for our team if we would have won tonight.”

Comets hit the wall in KM Trophy game

Kyle Burkhalter flies past Wahkiakum’s Romeo Savant and slams into the wall along the baseline while trying to save a rebound from going out of bounds during the first quarter of Saturday’s game, which Wahkiakum won 77-42.
NASELLE - It seemed like almost a tale of two ballgames, when in reality it was only one that went completely haywire for the Naselle Comets in the second half of their KM Trophy game with the visiting Wahkiakum Mules. The annual battle, named for the hill dividing the two neighboring school districts, was played Saturday, Dec. 9 in Lyle Patterson Gymnasium. It saw the Mules blow the Comets away with a 40-12 second half to trounce the home team 77-42; the Comets early season record fell to 2-2 with the loss. The final score in no way resembled what went on in the first 16 minutes of action. The Comets trailed at each of the first two quarter stops, 10-18 and 30-37, but except for 10 seconds of foul-ups at the end of each of the first two quarters, the Comets might well have been leading at the half. The Mules, in those two 10-second moments, scored eight points, four in each quarter, to grab a seven point halftime lead. The Mules earned much of that lead late in each period by a combination of Naselle missing foul shots, steals and a foul with less than five seconds left, which gave the Mules their last two points of the half. The Comets seemed to have the Mules in a pretty good position, despite trailing at the intermission. The Mules had been called for 18 first half fouls and three of their starters were in foul trouble. Due to their harassing, trapping defense, foul after foul was called. The Mules big man, 6-feet 4-inch Romeo Savant, had sat on the bench for a quarter and a half with two personal fouls, after scoring only four points. Three of their other starters had three fouls apiece and the Mules had to go to their deep bench early, on a team with inter-changeable parts including nine seniors. The Comets had hung around by scoring 12 of their 20 second-quarter points on free throws and the only Naselle player in foul trouble was their high scorer, Kyle Burkhalter who led the team with 13 first-half points. Kyle picked up his third foul just five seconds before the intermission. The game turned totally around in the second half, beginning a minute and a half into the third period when Kyle picked up his fourth foul and had to go to the bench. A rebound put-back by Conor Smith brought the Comets within four points of the Mules at 35-39 with 5:13 left in the third quarter. From then on things deteriorated badly as the Mules were to score more points in the remaining 13 minutes than they had in the previous 19 minutes of game action.Savant, who had re-entered the game at the beginning of the quarter, started to make his presence felt after his buddies had carried the load in the first half. Without Kyle's presence to help Smith and Casey Heagy with the unenviable task of trying to control the Mules big front line of Savant, Toby David, and Ty Briscoe, the Mules went on a 11-0 run to outpoint the Comets 13-5 in the quarter and they led 50-35 at the end of three periods.Even though the Comets shooting had "gone south," there was still hope that there could be a comeback in the fourth period. Naselle was 7 for 19 from the floor in the first half and only 3 for 21 in the second half. The comeback wasn't to be as the Comets nearly matched the Mules scoring in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, but then they went scoreless for nearly four minutes while the Mules ran off 15 points. The Mules built that run to a 20-2 advantage by the game's end while two of their players fouled out along with Kyle for the Comets. With the Mules harassing defense and rebounding allowing the Comets only one hurried shot on many possessions and the Mules offense running and scoring without any slow-down, the Mules outscored the Comets 27-7 in the fourth period to keep the KM Trophy with a 77-42 win.Naselle coach Brian Macy said, "Hats off to the Mules for playing a great second half. We needed someone to step up and hit some shots in the second half."I thought in the first half we played well, but had too many mistakes - especially to end the quarters. We must learn from the last two outings and correct the mistakes. If that gets accomplished we will be a very good team by season's end."Naselle travels to Oyehut for a game with North Beach Thursday, Dec. 14, and return home for a game with Tacoma Baptist on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Seagulls kick Comets out of their nest
SEASIDE, Ore. - For three quarters of the game the Naselle Comets had things going well and a slim lead over the Seaside Seagulls in the two teams first ever boys' basketball game between the two schools, Thursday, Dec. 7. However, the fourth quarter turned into a mass of swarming Gulls as Seaside shut down the Comets and sent them home with a 65-52 thumping. The Comets non-league record dropped to 2-1 for the season.Naselle coach Brian Macy said, "They turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter and we didn't handle it. We made some turnovers, giving them easy buckets, and it snowballed from there. We couldn't get anything going in the last quarter."Indeed, they couldn't as the Comets could only score three points in the period while giving up 19. Until that time, the Comets had maintained the lead, 32-29 at halftime and a third quarter lead of 49-46. The Gulls had held a 15-11 lead after one quarter. Naselle was again led by Kyle Burkhalter with a game-high 17 points and he was joined in double figures by Nathan Sultemeier with 12 points and Casey Heagy with 10. However, the Comets couldn't match the Gulls balanced scoring, with three players in double figures, but also with three more just out of double digits. Mike Peinhardt led the Gulls with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Naselle rebounders were led by Conor Smith with 9 and Kyle with 7 boards. The Comets did not move the ball as well as they have in their previous games as shown by their low number of assists. Nathan Sultemeier led with two assists and Smith led the theft department with two steals. In their previous game, the Comets had troubles at the foul line. In this game, they were 9 for 10 in the third period but only one for seven in the critical fourth stanza.Naselle coach Brian Macy said, "I think the difference in the third quarter was inexperience and depth. Seaside put pressure on early in the fourth which led to some steals and easy baskets, we responded by playing tentatively which only compounded the issue. We also gave up 21 offensive rebounds for the game and were out-rebounded for the first time all year 33-38. This is definitely an area we need to improve upon."We are playing very good basketball at times; we just need to be more consistent. I am confident we will keep getting better, as these boys practice and play hard."

Comets come out on top in rivalry renewal
By PHIL RAISTAKKAObserver corespondent
NASELLE - In a classic battle, the two neighboring schools went at it tooth-and-nail in a revival of the long-time boys basketball rivalry between Naselle and Ilwaco high schools. The non-league game, played Monday, Dec. 4, in Naselle's Lyle Patterson Gym, saw the Comets hold off the Fishermen 58-52.The tone of this game was set very early as both team were in a running, harassing mode of play. Ilwaco's senior standouts, 6-foot 4-inch Anthony Wirkkala and 5-8 Paul Blaylock dropped in Ilwaco's opening four points. They were more than matched with a 3 pointer by Naselle's 5-foot 7-inch sophomore Nathan Sultemeier, four points off drives by 6-foot 1-inch junior Kyle Burkhalter, and a fast break hoop by 6-foot 2-inch sophomore Conor Smith, with all three of the drives starting from Ilwaco turnovers.Blaylock countered with another three-pointer, only to be matched by Naselle senior Spencer Griss on a baseline drive and Kyle on a defensive rebound and coast-to-coast drive for a goal plus a free throw. Kyle's "basket plus one," gave the Comets a 14-7 lead with less than half of the quarter gone. Kyle was to rack up 11 points in the period, with four of his teammates also scoring when senior Casey Heagy dropped in a deuce before the quarter ended. On the Fishermen end of the court, only Wirkkala, Blaylock, and junior Matt Kaino were able to score as Naselle took a 20-13 lead at the horn. The Comets had a distinct rebounding advantage (39-23) in the game and this pleased Macy. He said, "I realize that they were missing a few players that would have helped them but I was pleased with the way we hit the boards in comparison to our first game. Kyle led our rebounders with 15, but several others, such as Conor, Austin, and Casey, chipped in to get some key boards. But we still need to improve our rebounding." Another area which probably will receive lots of work will be the Naselle free throw shooting where they only made 6 of 17 for 35 percent shooting, less than their (24 of 54) 44 percent shooting from the floor.Things were to change in the second stanza. Ilwaco sophomore Jack Whealdon was to emerge as the "mad bomber" as he opened Ilwaco's scoring with a trey. He was to add a long deuce and another three ball later to account for eight points in the period. Ilwaco was also to get a rebound hoop from Wirkkala and four points from sophomore Kolby Kirby, with his last shot just beating the half-time horn. The Comets had opened the second period with freshman Austin Burkhalter scoring on a rebound put-back, Kyle's second coast-to-coast score, and Austin's baseline drive, for Naselle's largest lead at 11 points. However, with Ilwaco pouring in 14 second quarter points, Naselle went stagnant as their long shots wouldn't drop and they only got one free throw by sophomore Nick Hines in slightly over six minutes when Kyle finally scored with forty seconds left in the half. When Kirby got his buzzer beater, it completed a 11-4 Ilwaco run and the Fishermen closed to within 27-29 at the intermission.Wirkkala opened the second half to first tie the game, and then give the Fishermen their first lead since the opening minutes at 31-29, Naselle couldn't make a shot for the first 3:05 of the half, and after Wirkkala's two scores, the Fishermen went flat for the next 4:05. Kyle finally broke the dry spell on a hustling second rebound effort to tie the game. Austin, Heagy, and Kyle followed with scores and Naselle's eight straight points had given them back a six-point lead. While this was going on, Wirkkala picked up his third foul at the 5:12 mark and was benched by Jarrett. Kyle picked up his third foul at 3:56, but stayed in the game, and Sultemeier his third foul 10 seconds later.Ilwaco responded with six straight points, two by senior Junior Talancon and four by Blaylock, the last two on free throws that tied the game at 37 with 1:13 left in the third period. Heagy responded with four points, the first on a coast-to-coast steal and hoop and the second on a fast-break pull-up jumper. Those hoops were sandwiched around Blaylock's free throws and they were to give Naselle the lead for good, as it turned out, at 41-38 as the third quarter ended. The fourth quarter was controlled by the Burkhalter boys, especially Kyle with 11 points of the first 13 points scored in a 13-8 run. Austin was to add five points and help control the boards as the game wound down. The Fishermen opened the final quarter with two Wirkkala hoops bracketed around Kyle's basket as Naselle maintained and then improved its lead. The Fishermen then went cold again for two minutes and 20 seconds while Kyle hit a three-ball and scored on a rebound put-back to give Naselle a six point lead at the 4:34 mark. Ilwaco finally found the hoop and four points by Blaylock got them within four points of the Comets. However, Kyle came right back with two offensive drives which left the Ilwaco defense scrambling and Naselle had its biggest lead of the quarter at eight points with 2:25 left. The Fishermen were again to go without a point for the next two minutes and 10 seconds while the Comets were having their troubles at the foul line. Until the final seconds, they were only two for six at the line inside the final 1:48, while missing the front ends of two one-and-ones. This allowed the Fishermen to hang around but they were missing their shots, thus allowing the Comets to run the clock.Jarrett called timeout in the middle of this run and instructed his team to set up for three point shots. Whealdon responded with his third trey of the game and Blaylock his second three-ball. Those six points allowed the Fishermen to get closer, but each time, the Comets would make a free throw or two, capped by Austin's two-for-two with 7.9 seconds left and the Comets 17-14 fourth quarter gave them their hard-fought 58-52 win.Jarrett said, "We have to learn to play hard in every game with the people that we have. My hat is off to the Naselle players and their coaches; they came out and played hard-nosed man-to-man defense and out-played us."Macy concluded, "I was pleased with the way that we played team defense. We had some breakdowns, but Wirkkala and Blaylock are especially tough players to defend. Overall, I was pleased with the way that we played."

The rivalry today
The two teams were once opponents in the now defunct Pacific County League, with games dating back into the '20s. Over the years, with Ilwaco gaining and Naselle dropping in school population, the schools went their separate ways as far as athletics, especially basketball and football, were concerned. However, with yet another change in Washington athletics the "Battle of Bear River Ridge" was revived. This year's rivalry went deeper than the two schools' long-time relationship. The two head coaches, Paul Jarrett of Ilwaco and Brian Macy of Naselle, both have roots in the Naselle athletic program. Jarrett, an Ilwaco graduate and an all-state performer for the Fishermen, coached the Naselle JVs and was an assistant in the Naselle basketball program until two years ago. Now a counselor at the Naselle Youth Camp and a resident of Naselle, Jarrett took over the Ilwaco basketball reins this year. Macy, who was a standout at Naselle, took over the basketball coaching duties at Naselle last year. The patrons, students and athletes of the each school also have a familiarity with the other school through such things as musical performances, contests, and athletics - especially baseball, softball, volleyball, track, and cross country. In other words, the resumption of the hoop rivalry was a game waiting to happen. And happen it did. Both teams are loaded with young, relatively inexperienced, players, but neither team played as though they were short on experienced talent through most of this game. Both teams have four seniors on their roster, with only three senior Fishermen available and seeing action and only two senior Comets getting playing time. The best should be yet to come for both of these young teams.
The Naselle JVs jumped off to a 10-0 lead on the young Fishermen in the preliminary game. As it turned out, that lead was enough for the Comets to hold on for a 35-31 win. The Comets led 19-8 at the half, only to see the Fishermen come back with a big second half to get within two points of the Comets with five minutes left to play. Naselle was able to outscore Ilwaco 7-5 in the remaining minutes for their 35-31 victory.

BAD SECOND HALF COSTS COMETS Leading 26-23 at the half over favored North Beach, the Comets succumbed to the Hyaks pressure defense and were outscored 42-15 in the second half to lose 65-41 in the Pacific 2B League opener for both teams. Hampered by a hand injury suffered the previous night in a win over Wahkiakum, Naselle's 6-0 post Cheryl Steppe was limited to six points in the game, while fellow starting post Ashley Ahlstrom was held scoreless. The Comets are already playing without one of their top players, Brandi Keightley, who is expected to get a prognosis from a doctor today regarding a broken finger suffered in P.E. class."We've played four games in six nights without a practice," said Naselle head coach Robert Torppa. "North Beach is a good team."Erin Saari led the Comets with 15 points and added six rebounds. Haley Landis came off the bench to lead the team with nine rebounds. Sophomore Cheresse Weidman led the Hyaks with 14 ponts. The Comets shot just 31-percent from the field and were 12-for-27 at the free throw line, turning the ball over 21 times to 14 for North Beach. "They pressured us really hard and we just didn't handle that pressure," said Torppa. Naselle travels to Tacoma Baptist for another league game Thursday night.

LADY FISHERMEN HOLD OFF COMETS FOR THIRD WIN
Lanie Kary scored all nine of Ilwaco's points in the fourth quarter, including two key baskets in the final 90 seconds as the Lady Fishermen defeated Naselle 49-46 at Aase Gymnasium Thursday night.A pair of free throws by Kary gave Ilwaco a 42-32 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Naselle closed to within three points on an Erin Saari free throw with 1:54 remaining. Saari swiped the ball from Ilwaco's Bonnie Perez on the next possession, but could not convert on the end of a fast break. Off the rebound, Kary was wide open downcourt for a layin to give the Lady Fishermen a 47-42 lead. Saari squeezed a pass inside to Colette Beaulaurier, who scored with 1:11 left to make it a one possession game again, but Ilwaco was able to run the shot clock to one second before Allison Brooks fed Kary inside for a close range bucket to make it 49-44 Ilwaco. Kellyn Pakenen drew a foul with 32 seconds left, but missed both free throws and the Comets ran out of time as Cheryl Steppe picked up the final points of the game on a rebound putback as time expired.Anna Kitzman led all scorers, picking up 14 of her game-high 20 points in the first half and scoring all six of Ilwaco's third quarter points. The Lady Fishermen turned the ball over 13 times in the third quarter, but Naselle was only able to convert five points off the turnovers as the Comets gave the ball up 11 times in the period. Kary finished with 18 points for Ilwaco.Cheryl Steppe had team-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds for Naselle. Saari had six assists and five steals to go with nine points. Young Comets win

Young Comets get first win in opener
Putting together four strong quarters was to the key to the Naselle Comets boys basketball opener, as they came back to beat the highly regarded Warrenton High School 68-57, Friday, Dec. 1.The young Comets team showed little evidence of their inexperience as they took an opening lead of 17-9 after one period against Warrenton. However, the Warriors outscored the Comets 42-29 during the middle two quarters to take the lead 50-46 going into the last period. The Comets, with junior Kyle Burkhalter leading the way with a game high double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds, came back with a 22-6 fourth quarter to win going away. Naselle's early season record is 1-0.In addition to Kyle's big game, the Comets had three other players in double figures with sophomore Nathan Sultemeier scoring 17, freshman Austin Burkhalter 14, and senior Casey Heagy 10 points. That quartet accounted for all of the Naselle points except for two by sophomore Conor Smith and it more than offset the balanced Warriors' scoring. Ryan Lampi with 12 points and Michael O'Casey with 11 led the Warrenton scoring. Veteran Eric Gantenbein, who figures to be one of the Warriors top scorers this year, and 6-3 Jordan Little each added eight points to the Warrenton total. After Naselle had nearly doubled the score, at 17-9, on the Warriors in the first quarter, the Warrenton offense came alive as they poured in 27 second-period points while holding the Comets to 11 counters, Naselle's lowest scoring period of the game. The Comets trailed 28-36 at the intermission.Naselle coach Brian Macy said, "The kids played well overall and we shot well. It was a good thing because we were out-rebounded in the first half something like 10-20 and Warrenton had 18 offensive rebounds for the game. We had some defensive breakdowns, but that isn't unexpected this early in the season. We were in trouble in the second quarter when Casey (Heagy) came in and scored five points and Nate (Sultemeier) had several steals in the period."Naselle started its comeback in the third period as the firm of Burkhalter, Sultemeier, and Co. began to dismantle the Warriors. It didn't happen immediately as Naselle only outscored the Warriors 18-15 in the quarter to narrow the gap to four points at 46-50, at the end of three stanzas. The fourth quarter, however, was all Naselle as the Comets out-scored and out-defended the Warriors 22-6. The Comets, who shot 50 percent for the game, got the hot hand as they poured in their highest point production of the game. That offense, and the Comets harassing defense, propelled them to their 68-57 opening game win in the brand new 2006-07 season."Casey hit two big fifteen foot shots in the fourth quarter, on nearly identical plays, when we were behind 53-55," Macy said. "We worked hard and competed well the entire night. We also shot the ball very well - I will take 50 percent from the field and 70percent from the line every night. We also took care of the ball fairly well committing only 11 turnovers."Execution on offense was inconsistent and we had breakdowns on defense at times. This is to be expected early in the year, but we must improve. Rebounding is a major concern - although we out-rebounded Warrenton by the game's end we were behind 10-20 at the half, and Warrenton ended up with 18 offensive rebounds. This must change or our success will be limited.

NASELLE - The Naselle Comets girls' basketball team was able to open its 2006-07 season with an 11-point lead on the Warrenton Warriors in their season opening game played in Lyle Patterson Gym Friday, Dec. 1. The Comets led 16-5 at the end of one quarter but that was to be their last hurrah as they lost to the Warriors 27-42.Ashley Ahlstrom led the Comets early spurt with eight of her nine game points in the first period. But she, like Cheryl Steppe, got into early foul trouble and had to go to the bench. Naselle coach Bob Torppa said, "We lost what momentum we had and couldn't hit our shots after the first quarter. Colette (Beaulaurier) came in and did a fine job but the rest of our shooters just could not hit their shots. We only scored seven points in the second period and four in the whole second half, with no points in the fourth period," Torppa lamented. The Comets still managed to hold the lead at 23-21 at the half, but the second half was all Warrenton as the Comets went stone cold. Naselle was outscored 4-21 in the last 16 minutes as the Warriors won going away. "We don't have as much help in the middle as we had planned on as Sylvia (Herrold) decided not to turn out and to play club volleyball instead of basketball. When we don't hit our shots (22 percent for the game) things don't go well. In our summer league games, we had our outside shooters scoring in double figures at times, but that didn't happen in this game. That was especially true in the second half when we taking our shots from outside instead of working it inside.

Naselle 16 7 4 0 - 27

The Naselle JVs also lost their game. JV Coach Greg Nelson said, "We played the first half like it was the first game of the season. We did better in the second half, but by then Warrenton had a pretty good lead."

BROTHERS LEAD NASELLE TO SECOND WIN

Get ready for the Burkhalter boys, Naselle!Brothers Kyle and Austin Burkhalter combined for 39 points for the second straight game as the Comets defeated Bear River Ridge rival Ilwaco 58-52 Monday night in their home opener at Patterson Gymnasium. One game after a 25 point, 15 rebound performance in a win over Warrenton, junior Kyle Burkhalter saw his production drop...by one point. Burkhalter equalled his rebounding total and scored nine of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as Naselle pulled away for the win. Austin Burkhalter, Kyle's freshman younger brother, added 15 points for the Comets, who improved to 2-0 with the victory."He can stroke it from outside," said Macy of the younger Burkhalter. "Kyle is more of a slasher and a really good defender. Austin has some work to do on the defensive end. That's where he really needs to improve, but for a freshman, he's real smooth. He's a smooth operator."Ilwaco, playing with only eight varsity players in uniform, dropped to 1-1 with the loss.Even without the services of 6-7 junior post Ryan Blake, who will miss the first three games of the season for disciplinary reasons, Ilwaco had an advantage inside with 6-4 Anthony Wirkkala, who bulled over Naselle defenders for two early baskets as the teams traded fire early."We talked about how we would have to deny him the ball as much as possible and help on him when he did get the ball in there," said Naselle head coach Brian Macy. "I thought we did a decent job. It's early in the year, so hopefully we'll do a better job. Him being in foul trouble didn't help them either I think he played a little less aggressive after he picked up a couple fouls." Naselle connected on its first six shot attempts, with all five starters making field goals on the first five possessions. The Comets led 20-13 at the end of one quarter and extended their lead to 24-13 early in the second frame before Ilwaco made a run to close within two by halftime.Sophomore guard Jack Whealdon, the district champion in golf in the fall, showed an accurate touch from long range, nailing a pair of three pointers and scoring eight first half points to help the Fishermen close the gap. Naselle struggled against Ilwaco's 2-3 zone defense, even with Wirkkala on the bench with second quarter foul trouble, as the Fishermen went on a 9-1 run to cut the Naselle lead to 29-27 at the half. Wirkkala returned to the floor to start the third quarter and his presence was immediately felt with two inside baskets, one on a rebound putback to give Ilwaco a 31-29 lead. Casey Heagy gave Naselle an offensive boost in the quarter with six points off the bench and the Comets carried a 41-38 lead into the final period. After resting for a period in the third quarter, Kyle Burkhalter came alive in the final eight minutes, going 4-for-6 from the field including a 3-point shot as Naselle opened up an 8-point lead and held on to the finish, despite some shaky foul shooting. For Ilwaco, Paul Blaylock aggressive attacked the paint on the dribble and finished with career highs of 19 points and eight rebounds. Wirkkala was limited to 14 points, one night after rolling up 29 points in a win at Ocosta. Whealdon finished with 11 points for the Fishermen, who host Knappa Friday night in a game that will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1230 ESPN. Naselle travels to Seaside on Thursday night.

Local Legend

Naselle basketball players practice on the floor of the Lyle Patterson Gym. The facility is named after the local legend who coached the boys team for 32 years.Lyle Patterson still influencing Naselle Comets basketball

NASELLE - A banner two-thirds the length of the basketball court at Naselle High School honors Lyle Patterson, the legendary coach the gymnasium is named after. It says, "Thirty-two years, 623 wins, 31 winning seasons, 13 league championships, 15 district championships, 18 places at state."What the banner does not say about Coach Patterson is the lasting influence he has had on the young people of the Naselle-Grays River Valley he worked with for more than three decades. Both varsity basketball teams are coached by Patterson protégés, with Brian Macy playing in the 1980s and Bobby Torppa in the 1970s. Assistant boys Coach Scott Smith got his start as JV coach with Patterson in the 1980s, girls' assistant Greg Nelson played for Lyle in the 1980s and volunteer assistant Tim Wirkkala played for him in the 1990s.Macy and Torppa both run many of the same zone offenses that Lyle taught them. "I changed the names of some of the offenses, but they are the same basic patterns," Macy says with a chuckle. Torppa still chirps many of the same offensive play names when instructing his girls today, and probably half the fans in attendance know them by heart from their playing days as well. Macy sticks with the identical man-to-man full-court pressure defense that Lyle preached and he and Wirkkala, Smith, Torppa and Nelson still run many of the core drills that Patterson came to Naselle with from Michigan in the 1960s.There are at least a dozen coaches working in school districts around the state who either played for Coach Patterson or who assisted him. There are countless other men who help in their communities with youth basketball and other sports programs. The best thing is those men are teaching their charges more than just basketball because Coach Patterson taught them much more than only sports, as well.A banner covering the gymnasium several times over couldn't chronicle all the positive things Lyle and wife Elaine Patterson have done for their boys over the years. The Pattersons now reside in Longview and still watch several Comets games each season.

Coach Macy

Courtsey of the Chinook Observer

11/29/2006

With only one returning senior on his team, you might think that Naselle coach Brian Macy may have to pull a few tricks out of his bag in order to compete in the Pacific League. But according to the coach, “We are young and we are good.

Kyle Burkhalter is the only returning starter from last year’s 18-8 Naselle Comets basketball team. The junior will help lead a very young, and possibly very good, Comets team this season.

The Good the Young the Comets

NASELLE - Brian Macy has only starting junior forward Kyle Burkhalter returning from last season's 18-8 Comets basketball team that missed going to state by an overtime loss to Morton at district and Josh Martin is the only returning senior on the team, but Macy is far from discouraged. "We are young and we are good," the coach says matter-of-factly.Burkhalter will be asked to again guard the other teams' leading scorer and he should provide scoring punch of his own from both in close and from beyond the arc. Freshman brother Austin will handle the ball for the Comets and if football is any indication, will also provide some offense. Sophomore Conor Smith will be a post player and will be called upon to guard much taller players almost every night.Fellow sophmores Nate Sultemeier and Nick Hines will play guard positions and both have skills, even though they have limited size, according to Macy. Spencer Griss is a good athlete who works hard in practice and will likely be the first player off the bench. Gabe See, Martin and Jeremy Ray will also be reserves and Macy credits them for knowing their roles and being productive players. Casey Heagy may eventually be added to the mix as well. "All the guys practice hard, learn quickly and are very cooperative," Macy said. The Comets will have their hands full from pre-season favorite Northwest Christian who return the league's MVP in six-foot, five-inch Matt Meyers. South Bend and Valley will have the quickness and savvy to also contend for the Pacific 2B title."We will have to push the basketball up the court at every opportunity," Macy says. "We don't have the size to pound it inside. We will run a motion man-to-man offense and we will move the ball around and have to make our shots against a zone to be effective. I like to work from the inside out so our post players will get lots of touches." Macy believes many teams will press the neophyte Comets, but predicts, "By the end of the year we should be able to handle the pressure. I think we can contend."Defense is where the Comets must produce to win. "I like to go man-to-man. I guess that's something I learned from Lyle Patterson. We still run some of his zone offenses, too," Macy admits of the venerable Naselle coach that the gym is named after. "We will pressure full court and mix in some zone traps and zone defense and hopefully our "D" will trigger some easy baskets."Although the WIAA has not officially announced the number of District IV berths to the 2B state tourney in Spokane, there were five entrants to the football playoffs and Naselle is optimistic about receiving the same in basketball. The entire Central League is tough from top to bottom, Macy says. "I'm excited about our team's great attitude and work ethic."Whether the young Comets are good enough to return to the glory days of Naselle hoops success in Spokane this season will depend upon how they mature and handle pressure, but their positive attitude and cohesive team play will be hard to bet against. And the following season, the Comets will be able to drop the "young" tag and be just plain good.Scott Smith is the assistant coach and Paul Wirkkala is volunteering with the junior varsity while Tim Wirkkala is a volunteer coach with the varsity. Other players out for Naselle are Alan Erickson, Keifer Bell, Alex Bennett, Nate Carlson, Carson Cooper, Stephan Griss, Marcos Herrera and John Hines. Also on the roster are Gary Johansen, Manual Lopez, Drew Macy, Jesus Martinez, Marcus Sanchez, Mike Shirley, Calen Thompson and Chris Houston.
