Comets beat Mules on their court

CATHLAMET - The Naselle Comets girls' basketball team won its second game of the young season as they beat the Wahkiakum Mules at Cathlamet in a non-league game. The Comets' win on Dec. 11 gave them a non-league record of 2-2.Coach Bob Torppa said, "This was a game of many turnovers by both teams, with the Mules having 39 and the Comets 25. We were trailing by one at the half. Cheryl Steppe had nine of her 18 points in the third quarter to give us a nine-point lead at the end of the period. With only three points scored by each team in the fourth quarter, we were able hold on for a nine-point win."Steppe was to finish with a double-double, adding 14 rebounds as well as four blocks to her 18 points. She was to receive plenty of rebounding help with Ahlstrom adding 12 boards and four steals. Erin Saari had a good all around game with seven points, six rebounds and eight steals. Kellyn Pakenen added six steals.

In describing the JV game, Coach Greg Nelson said, "My JV team lost 38 to 34. I was pretty proud of them in the fourth quarter. We were down by 20 at the beginning of the quarter. We came back and had opportunities that could have got us the win. We didn't lose - we just ran out of time."
