By PHIL RAISTAKKAObserver corespondentNASELLE - The Naselle Comets girls' basketball team led at the half, but they couldn't hold off the North Beach Hyaks in the second half as the Comets lost their Pacific League opener to the Hyaks 65-41. The game, played Tuesday, Dec. 12, in Lyle Patterson Gym saw the Comets record drop to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in league. The Comets fell behind in the first period 9-15 but they put together a big second quarter, outscoring the Hyaks 17-8 to go in at the break leading 26-23. However, after the intermission, it was a totally different story as the Hyaks took control with a 42-15 second half.Erin Saari led the Comets with 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Haley Landis led in rebounds with nine. The Comets second period play didn't hold up against the Hyaks balanced offense in the second half. The Hyaks had three players in double figures and one just out of double digits while Naselle had only Saari in double figures with her game-high 15 points. Naselle only shot 26 percent for the game so rebounding was important for the Comets where Landis stood out with support from Saari. The Hyaks, after getting warmed up in the second half, made more than 42 percent of their tries.
