Comets ground Seagulls

RAYMOND ---- Naselle had its young stars on display Tuesday night, as freshman Austin Burkhalter scored 17 points and snared seven rebounds, and sophomore Conor Smith added 16 points and six boards to lead the Comets past Raymond 59-42 in a Pacific 2B League boys basketball matchup."Austin and Conor had breakout games for us," Naselle assistant coach Tim Wirkkala said. "Austin got to the line a lot and caused matchup problems for them (the Seagulls), and Smith had a real balanced game. Overall, we were real pleased with our defense, too, especially in the second half."The Comets (3-2, 2-0 league) led 29-16 at halftime, then stymied the Gulls with a 22-9 run in the third period.Kyle Burkhalter, who had been averaging more than 20 points per game, finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
