The Comets (1-4, 0-2 in league) were outscored 27-16 in the middle two quarters of the game. They came back with a strong fourth period (23-17) but it wasn't enough as the Crusaders held on for the win.Kyle Burkhalter had an outstanding all-around game with a double-double (14 points and 15 rebounds) in addition to leading the Comets with five assists and four steals. Comet boys lose first league game to North Beach

By PHIL RAISTAKKAObserver corespondent
NASELLE - A disastrous third quarter paved the way for the Naselle Comets boys loss in their opening Pacific League basketball game Thursday, Dec. 13, in Lyle Patterson Gym. Naselle was out-pointed by 11 points in the third quarter. The Comets had a 34-30 half-time lead over the North Beach Hyaks, but by the time that the third period ended, the Comets trailed 49-42 on their way to a 74-62 loss. The loss dropped the Comets season record to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in league games. The Comets seemed to be in charge of the game through the early going as they led 20-15 after one quarter and, after being outscored 15-14 in the second eight minutes, they still held a four point lead at the intermission. The Burkhalter brothers, especially Austin with 17 first half points, provided the Comets with much of their early momentum. Kyle, playing despite his chronically-injured shoulder was able to score 15 game points. Conor Smith gave the Comets three double digit scorers as he added 12 points to the Naselle total. Smith also added 10 rebounds in earning a double-double.The Hyaks, however, got very well-balanced scoring with four players in double figures, led by Sam Johnson with 21 points Russell Alfaro 16, Jaamal Lind 16 and Jordan Fry with 10, gave the Hyaks a balanced scoring attack. Alfaro and Fry were each to pull down 11 rebounds to lead the Hyaks in that department.Of the second half, coach Brian Macy said, "We got as close as seven points but were unable to overcome the deficit." Part of the problem was that Sam Johnson's defense held Austin Burkhalter to two third quarter points, and to only four points in the second half. When the other Comets didn't pick up the scoring challenge, the Hyaks expanded their lead from four points to seven points, and then to the eventual 12 points difference. In addition to Kyle Burkhalter's continued shoulder problems, NHS played without Nathan Sultemeier who was out with the flu. Gabriel See had his most productive scoring game of the season, so far, with eight points.

Big final period nets Fishermen 61-49 win over Naselle

ILWACO - Fishermen freshman point guard, Karl Oman, sank 10 consecutive free throw attempts in the final period and scored 21 points for the game as Ilwaco pulled away from Naselle to earn a 61-49 non-league win at Karl Aase Gymnasium Friday. The Comets had spurted to a 6-0 lead, but Ilwaco was ahead by 20-18 at the end of the second quarter and 33-31 after three periods before they netted a 28-18 edge in the final frame.Naselle held the advantage for the contest from the field, as they connected on 21 of 54 attempts (39 percent), while Ilwaco was a chilly 19 of 57 from the floor for 33 percent. The Fishermen's success from the charity stripe was a key to their win, as they shot 25 times and converted 18 shots (72 percent), while the Comets were 3-8 from the line for 38 percent.Neither team had spent a lot of time in the gym last week due to the storm that ravaged the area. Comet Coach Brian Macy said, "We still haven't found our rhythm or gotten into much of an offensive flow. We played excellent defense until the final period, but their size inside definitely bothered our shooters."Ilwaco mentor, Paul Jarrett, said, "Our kids have played with outstanding effort in all three games so far this season. The difference tonight was that our mental lapses weren't as often or for as long of a duration. We were happy to come away with a win against a very competitive basketball team."The first period began as an intense battle of man-to-man defenses. Connor Smith scored twice for Naselle and Kyle Burkhalter, who topped all scorers with 22 points, had a bucket and an assist to put the Comets up 6-0. Jordan DeSimone hit a trey for Ilwaco's first score with 3:18 to go in period one, cutting the lead in half. Field goals from Ryan Blake inside and Jack Whealdon outside helped the Fishermen close the gap to 8-7 after Nick Hines scored for Naselle in the initial quarter.Comet Austin Burkhalter got involved in the second period as he knocked down a "three," a field goal, and a free toss and Kyle scored another field goal to give Naselle their biggest lead of the game at 16-11. In the final two minutes of the first half Kolby Kirby came off the bench to sink a three-pointer and then reserve Whealdon knocked down a pair of three-bombs within 30 seconds of each other to put Ilwaco up by four. Kyle Burkhalter's hustle basket at the end of the second stanza made the score 20-18 in favor of the home team at intermission."Jack and Kolby really gave us a lift off the bench," Jarrett praised. "They both played great defense on Austin Burkhalter, took care of the basketball, and they both shot extremely well in key situations." The third period saw the lead change for the sixth time as Naselle went ahead on an Austin "three" and then Oman answered with two field goals to help Ilwaco regain the lead at 24-21.From mid-way through the second period until a minute into the final quarter neither team could muster more than a three-point lead as bodies flew and whistles seemed to blow at often puzzling times for both squads. Conor Smith scored three field goals to keep Naselle in the game in the third period, but Oman answered with a three-pointer and a pair of assists to end the period.Whealdon kicked off the final quarter with his third clutch shot from beyond the arc of the night and Oman sank two free throws to give Ilwaco a 38-31 lead. A basket inside by Austin Burkhalter and his old-fashioned three helped Naselle to close to 40-36. Down the stretch Kirby scored twice, Blake made a three-point play and Oman sank 10 consecutive foul shots (he was 12-12 from the line for the game) to help the Fishermen steadily pull away.Kyle Burkhalter scored 12 of his game-high point total in the final five minutes to keep Comets hope flickering, but in the end it was Oman's cool at the charity stripe and in handling the point guard duties that was the difference for the Fishermen. Another key to the contest for Ilwaco was when Austin Burkhalter picked up his fifth foul at the 3:10 mark and Jarrett alertly switched to a 2-3 zone defense with the Comet's outside shooting ace on the bench for the duration.Joining Oman in double-figures was Whealdon with 12 points for Ilwaco and Matt Kaino was the top rebounder with eight. For the Comets Austin Burkhalter added 14 points to Kyle's total of 22 and Conor Smith knocked in 10 points. Kyle and Austin Burkhalter each gathered in 11 boards and Smith added eight caroms.Jarrett said, "Matt Kaino played good defense on Kyle Burkhalter and Karl Oman is more than living up to expectations. The main thing for Karl is that he is having fun playing basketball and is growing in poise and confidence every time out."Naselle committed 24 turnovers to only 11 for the Fishermen, but the Comets dominated the taller Ilwaco five by out-rebounding the home team 47-35. Naselle was whistled for 22 fouls and Ilwaco was called for 13 fouls. The Fishermen sank seven three-point shots and the Comets connected on four treys. Ilwaco is now 1-2 on the season and the Comets are even at 1-1.

Patrick Whealdon scored 13 and Justin Short added seven points for Kip Meinhardt's young Fishermen, who fall to 0-3. Naselle had built a 28-10 half-time lead, but Ilwaco drew to within 42-41 before the Comets pulled away for the victory.

NASELLE - The Naselle Comets boys basketball team opened the season with a fast start against the Warrenton Warriors in the non-league opener in Naselle's Lyle Patterson gym Friday, Nov. 30.The Comets, most of them having just shed their football pads for their round-ball gear, started quickly, lost their momentum in the second period, but came back with a strong second half in beating the Warriors 61-52. The Comets quick start propelled them to a 16-9 first period bulge before the Warriors roared back with an 11-point second period scoring advantage to grab a 30-26 halftime lead. Whatever prescriptions that Naselle coach Brian Macy dispensed during the intermission must have worked as the Comets came out with a dominating 15-4 third period to take a seven point lead into the final eight minutes. The Comets increased that lead by two points in the fourth quarter in notching their initial win of the season. Coach Macy said, "We out-rebounded them 34-31. (We had) pretty spotty play for the most part. We will need to get more consistent pressure on defense, rebound better and definitely shoot free throws better. But for this early, and considering most of our player just finished playing football, it was not too bad of a showing. Some are still trying to get their basketball legs and get into basketball shape. Next week will definitely be a challenge and hopefully get us farther along, as far as conditioning is concerned." Naselle got balanced scoring from six members of their team with Kyle Burkhalter's 16 points leading three Comets in double figures. Nathan Sultemeier popped in 13 points, while Conor Smith added 10. The other three Comets, who scored were only a shot away from double digits. The Burkhalter brothers led the board patrol with Austin pulling down 12 boards and Kyle 9. Smith added 6 retrievals to help give Naselle a 34-31 rebounding advantage. The Comets have a busy non-league basketball schedule this week. After playing at Ilwaco last night (Tuesday), they entertain Seaside this Friday, Dec. 7, and are at Wahkiakum for the annual K M Trophy game on Saturday, Dec. 8.Those games will serve as a warm-up for three Pacific League games which will follow in the next six days (Dec. 13-18), with all three games to be played in Naselle.

Fishermen reel in victory

ILWACO ---- Carl Oman netted 21 points and Jack Whealdon added 12 as Ilwaco countered a combined 36-point performance by Naselle's Burkhalter brothers to claim a 61-49 nonleague boys basketball victory on Friday.Ilwaco trailed 8-7 after the opening period, but rallied to lead 20-18 at halftime and 33-31 entering the final eight minutes."They (the Fishermen) went on a run late in the fourth quarter," Naselle coach Brian Macy said. "We also had Austin Burkhalter foul out with two minutes left, and that didn't help. Ilwaco played some good defense against us, and we were a little tentative at the offensive end."Naselle's Kyle Burkhalter led all scorers with 22 points and 11 rebounds, with Austin Burkhalter adding 14 points and 12 rebounds. Conor Smith chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Comets hoopsters poised to follow in football's successful path

11/28/2007 12:01:00 AM
By KEVIN HEIMBIGNERObserver staff writer
NASELLE - "I'm confident that our success in football will have a very positive impact on how our basketball team will do," Comet hoops coach and athletic director Brian Macy predicts. "The football team's winning ways have made a huge boost to the confidence and self-image of our entire school and I'm sure that even though 16 of our basketball players are missing early workouts, we will be just fine in the long run."The long run includes competing for Pacific 2B League supremacy and ultimately a trip to Spokane for the state basketball tournament in March. Macy's crew of 30 athletes is in the running for both, even if they did lose a week of early season practice to pigskin prowess."We have a solid seven or eight player rotation in place from last season and summer league scrimmages," Macy says with confidence. The Comets will again be led by all-league Kyle and Austin Burkhalter. Kyle is a senior who night in and night out must guard the other team's best offensive scorer, a chore he has excelled in the past three seasons. Offensively he is a slasher who can score with a compendium of moves to the hoop or with a mid-range jumper and Macy says he may even ask Kyle to bring the ball up the court on occasion.Austin is an outside scoring threat, having led Naselle as a freshman in three-point production. "I'm hoping to use Austin and Conor Smith inside more as a post presence," Macy explains. "We will be forced to push the ball up the floor as much as possible. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if we never have to run a half court offense because our fast break is so effective."Nate Sultemeier is slated to start at the point guard position. Other returning lettermen vying for a starting spot and playing time are Alan Erickson and Gabe See as forwards and Nick Hines at guard. "Our guards are quick and play well defensively. The key will be how well they develop confidence in moving the basketball up the court," Macy says. "See and Erickson can play inside or outside and Smith has made a commitment to contribute more as a rebounder and scorer." Coach Macy will run a motion offense with either a three or four guard front to utilize his team's relative quickness. "It's going to be difficult for opponents to contain Kyle inside and Austin outside, especially if Smith can also contribute at the lost post," Macy said. The Comets will play at Lyle Patterson Gymnasium and will employ the same style of defense the legendary coach taught Macy - man-to-man, full-court pressure with maybe a touch of zone press thrown in to "change things up a bit."Macy predicts, "The Pacific League will be a dog fight. You never know what the private schools (Tacoma Baptist and Northwest Christian) will have for players and South Bend and Valley will again be very quick. Toutle looks to be the favorite in district, but Napavine, Adna, Wahkiakum and Mossyrock all have good athletes and strong programs. There will be a lot of quality teams going after only four berths to state."Macy says, "We're counting on several guys to step up and take on bigger roles as scorers and defenders. The guys come to practice every night and are dedicated to improving, willing to do whatever it takes to get better."Look for the Comets to be one of the top dogs in the fight, especially if they can remain healthy. Be assured that Naselle will run and press from buzzer to buzzer and that they will work hard to get the most out of their ability. Keeping Kyle Burkhalter's shoulder in place and him in the lineup may be the spark the Comets will need to make a trip to Spokane for a record 35th time, and the third time this decade. This will be Macy's fourth year as head coach at Naselle - he was varsity girls' coach at Ocosta for eight seasons. Scott Smith will again be assistant coach and Tim Wirkkala will volunteer for the varsity and Paul Wirkkala for the JV team. If the numbers stay strong he is likely to be the C-squad coach, as well. Other juniors out for the team are Alex Bennett, Stephan Griss and Mike Shirley. Cody Gilbert is a senior. Sophomores include Drew Macy, Nate Carlson, Randy Hamm, Marcos Herrera, John Hines, Gary Johansen, Larry Johnson, Manual Lopez, Jesus Martinez, Justin Phillips, Logan Scrabeck and Calen Thompson. Freshmen on the Comet's roster include Ollie Baker, Alex Bighill, Chase Chapman, Ian Fauver, Andy Gonzales, Leonel Mendoza and Kyle Mullins.
