Comets beat Cats back-to-back

NASELLE - The Naselle Comets girls took another step toward finishing the Pacific League season with a berth in the district tournament with a convincing 53-24 league win over the Ocosta Wildcats Monday, Jan 22, in Naselle's Lyle Patterson Gym. The Comets' league record climbed to 5-3 and 8-6 overall. Ocosta has yet to win a league game.The Comets only have two of their remaining six games at home and they play games against teams that are well above them in the league standings in three of their remaining games. Therefore, their last home game against second place Tacoma Baptist on Feb. 2, and two away games at Northwest Christian on Feb. 6 and at Tacoma Baptist on Feb. 9 should go a long way in determining the Comets' post season plans.In this game against the out-manned Wildcats, the Comets took control early and rolled to an easy win. Erin Saari led the Comets with 14 points and Ashley Ahlstrom added 10 points and six rebounds. Haley Landis was just out of a double-double with eight points and she led the Comets with 10 rebounds.The Comets roared to a 22-3 first quarter lead and added a 14-5 second period for a 36-8 halftime lead. With nine of the Comets scoring in the game, the Comets coasted home with a 17-16 second half for their big win.If the Comets can win half of their remaining games, they would finish the league season with a winning percentage and could finish as high as fourth place in the Pacific League. If the Comets should finish as the league's fourth place team, they will earn the right to play their first tournament game at home. Their final regular home game of the season will be this Friday, Feb. 2, against Tacoma Baptist in Lyle Patterson Gym.
