Kyle Burkhalter's efforts not enough to stop balanced HyaksOYEHUT - An outstanding performance by Naselle's Kyle Burkhalter was not enough to counter the balanced team effort of the North Beach Hyaks in a Pacific League make-up boys' basketball game played in the Hyaks gym Wednesday, Jan. 3. Burkhalter poured in a season-high 29 points but his solo efforts fell far short of the Hyaks, with four players in double figures, in a 72-50 Naselle loss. The Comets absorbed their first league loss of the season, to fall to 2-1 in league games and 4-5 overall.The Comets fell behind early on and lost ground steadily as the Hyaks controlled all aspects of the game, except Kyle. His play was not enough to counter the Hyaks onslaught. "We got out-rebounded and out-hustled," said Coach Brian Macy.Casey Heagy added eight points and Conor Smith seven points to the Naselle total. The rest of the Comets scored only six points total among them. That contrasted with the Hyaks team scoring, where they were led by four players with 17, 15, 15, and 10 points respectively and with 16 points scored by the remaining players. Ryan Cariker had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.The Comets trailed 14-9 after one quarter, 29-19 at the half and 52-38 after three periods on their way to the 72-50 loss. Naselle was out-scored 43-31 in the second half.After a solid season-opening stretch of games, the Comets have now lost three straight where they have been out-scored 203-129. It doesn't get any easier for the rest of the week with Willapa Valley coming to town on Thursday and a trip to South Bend on Saturday, both tough league games.Hyaks 72, Comets 50
